  A 26 year old mother in Islamic dress had an unspecified liquid thrown into her face in Barley Lane by a passenger in a white van. It did not cause any harm to her.
• A gang of 6 teenagers indecently assaulted two 16-year old girls at the Clements Road/High road junction before walking off laughing.

• A woman came face-to-face with an intruder in her own Redbridge home
  A woman came face-to-face with an intruder in her home. A 48 year old woman was praying in her bedroom when she heard a noise. She investigated and bumped uno a thug on her landing at 2.07am. The weapon he had was about a foot long and was a hammer or an axe. Her screams unnerved the thief and he fled empty handed.

• Former Redbridge student wins £500,000 on 'Who Wants to be a Millionaire'
  A former Redbridge student wins £500,000 on 'Who Wants to be a Millionaire'. Peter Spyrides, a former pupil of Forest School, Snaresbrook said:
  
  "the £500,000 question was a history one, and fortunately we had covered that period when I studied at School. So thanks to the education I received there, I'm £500,000 better off."
  
  He plans to spend his winnings on a new car and a big house.

• News in brief for the 4th week in October
  Former Ursuline High student Lisa Burke, 24, has been named Britain's sexiest weathergirl, beating the likes of Denise Van Outen and Ulrika Jonnson. She works on Sky News and won 25% of votes on a poll of 1000 men.
• An elderly lady had a display-type firework put through her letterbox. It was a 'twin blast proton bomb' and used for prefessional displays. She was on the phone when she was a man peering through her window. Moments later the ignited firework was put through the letterbox and it blasted off, smashing vases and the front hallway window was blown out. She did not sufer any serious injury.
• The referee who invented red and yellow cards has died. Ken Aston, 86 of Barkingside who died at King Georges Hospital. He was chairman of FIFA's refereeing committee, was responsible for appointing officials for 1970 and 1974 World Cup Finals and for drawing up rules for the penalty shootout.

• Council statistics are in!
  All Councils have to produce 'performance indicators' to monitor their success and performance. Some of the more interesting ones for 2000/2001 are:
  
  
  • Percentage of total tonnage of household rubbish recycled: 6.31%
  • Percentage of highways that are either of a high or acceptable standard of cleanliness: 84.35%
  • Domestic burglaries for every 1,000 households: 18.56
  • Violent crimes for every 1000 people: 22.18
  • Of these, robberies for every 1000 people: 4.39
  • Vehicle crimes for every 1000 people: 33.29
  • Number of school pupils permanently excluded for every 1000 pupils: Primary Schools: 0.17, Secondary Schools: 1.28
  • No. of visits by members of the public made to the Council's libraris, for ech resident: 8.58
  • No of books and other items issued by the Council's libraries, for each resident: 8.58
  • Cost of maintaining roads (worked out for every 100km travelled by a vehicle on principle roads: £0.31
