01/09/2001 Review from visitor Nigel Overall rating 5/10
This is a pub that looks huge on the outside but is really quite small - I can imagine the back-room being huge. It''s a good, friendly pub in the heart of Barkingside. It had relatively low numbers of people going (except for Fri and Sat when it was packed out) but in August 2001 it had new management (again!) and was packed to bursting when I was there, on a Friday in Sept 2001. Perhaps they had a big birthday bash going on when I was in?? The staff used to be fun and used to have a chat as they walked round collecting glasses, but those people have moved on and now seems to be a normal pub indistuinguishable from the others. A pub suited for 18 - 30 but older people do go there. DJ on Sat nights, Fri and Sat are the only nights it seems to be full.

It was known as the Chequers for years and years, was forced to change its name because of the chain of pubs it belonged to, now it is called The Chequers again. The name never stuck, and noone ever used it.

One good thing about its location is there is a McDonalds opposite if you''re peckish and also a bagel shop a bit further down that''s open 24 hours on Saturday.

Conclusion

It''s ok but the prices are relatively high. They don''t take debit/credit cards anymore so between drinks pop down to a cash machine.
