We'll seeing as I am still living here I may find that question a little difficult, but hopefully not for too long now.
When I do move I know I will miss the many good friends that I have made here.

I know with all the so called trouble it has had,im sure that people who grew up here,or lived here for a few years will soon regret moving away from the area, but as in many cases, you dont move just in a whim, you move for a reason!

It'll always be home to me and I love my visits.  I did the whole memory lane thing when I last went.  Went to Newbury Pk School, St Lawrence Church (there were still people there who knew who I was!), our old house (which hadn't changed at all) and, of course, the Old Maypole Inn (which has changed - a lot!!).  I made poor old Phil walk all the way around Valentines Park (amazed that the penny rides were still outside the cafe)and then went to Bodgers and got lost because some of the roads are now pedestrianised.  I had a brilliant time and intend to have a few more visits.

I miss the Ilford I knew, when you could go to bed without locking all the doors,in the summer we used go out all day and play and our parents never worried  because they knew we would be home for supper. There were no gangs of yobbos ,roaming around looking for trouble,if we were in trouble, any adult would look after us if we asked for help and in the neighbourhood everyone knew everyone else,it was a great place to grow up in even during the war,we even used to play soccer with the young german POW's most of them weren't much older than us.If there is a heaven I hope it would be like the old Ilford.

On the Clive Bull show on LBC Radio last night they were discussing Ilford!  Everyone who phoned in was moaning about the place and saying what a s.h*t.h.o.l.e it is now, which is true.

I certainly miss the Ilford of old.

You will need to be feeling pretty strong, Cissy, if you haven't been to Ilford for 20 years, strong enough to face the shock you will have when you see the deterioration of the place.  :-[

I was walking up the High Road a couple of days ago and couldn't believe the state of the paving stones, absolutely covered in black blobs of chewing gum, stains and other muck!  Considering the council are forever replacing the paving and spend a fortune having it cleaned, it is in a disgraceful state.

As i work for the local council down here,it sounds like it is much worse up in your neck of the woods, but no matter how much council tax you pay, there will always be people who think they can do whatever the f*** they like cos they pay their council tax,and MOST of the people that cause the mess are unemployed and dont want to work and only fill out a council tax benefit form every 6 months.aka BUMS!!!!!!!

Title: Re: How much do you miss ilford?

There are some very nice areas in Redbridge, it's just the centre of Ilford that is such a filthy dump.

Title: Re: How much do you miss ilford?
Post by Paddington on Jul 21st, 2005, 9:53am
I think i would take issue with you Iain. The reason they do what they want is because they are bums and do not pay council tax, the government pays it for them if they are unemployed etc. Since it is effectively FREE they do not value it. The same argument can be used for the national health service I suppose, in that it is free so it can be abused. People need to be made aware nothing is free. Even if you are unemployed you still pay tax - if you smoke, drink or drive a car or pay VAT etc. It is all your money you are wasting.
Some parts of Ilford are nice, leafy suburbs, clean and all that but the town centre, the bit most people see is a terrible disappointment. Stratford has become a nicer shopping area by dint of a lot of investment and planning. I suspect Ilford was busy resting on its laurels and got left behind and they are desperately attempting to catch up in the civic development stakes. The Olympics, Crossrail and the tramway are great things to bring investment to the area but all we seem to be getting at the moment are blocks of flats. OK we have got the new cinema and the bowling alley but they have to keep going at it to give people things to do and schools and doctors etc all in short supply. The centre is still fairly deserted at night.

I returned to Ilford for Mother's Day this March and stayed a the Travelodge near Clements Road. We were greeted by armed policemen in reception and were told that a criminal was in our room and had to wait for him to be taken out handcuffed and the room cleaned. My husband and son went off to a West Ham match and I      met my oldest friend in the restaurant/bar next door for lunch and we were turfed out because the fire  alarm went off and the whole area was evacuated and the most gloious firemen turned up to take care of us all. We then had a meal next door in a buffet chinese restaurant, and as we were the    only white people dining were totally ignored for the whole evening and left feeling non-existent.

Seems you had a good trip to Ilford. I wonder if its women of a certain age (no offence) who have all this drama, my mother came to visit us and was confronted by a flasher in Valentines Park. She ended up chasing him as she said she wanted another look! She's 80 odd.

She then reversed her car into another outside the house in the road and locked bumpers. She did not notice and when she tried to pull away and wondered why the car was not moving, put her foot down, shot forward and hit the car in front (mine) and pulled the bumper right off the car behind.
We all stood like lemons waving her goodbye.

She's down again this weekend for the BBQ.

So you are saying that all the other London Borough's do not have any problems?
We went to Bristol some time back, and let me tell you Ilford was safe compared to the part we went to, also when we were in Limerick last year we went to get something to eat, took one look at the place and drove out really quickly we was informed afterwards that we had been in the no go area nicknamed gun city.

Mossside up in manchester is supposed to be a no go area, now that is one place which should be called "GUN CITY"

They do have CCTV all over the town centre but that's for crime prevention. The only CCTV London cameras I have found have been the traffic ones and they are not near Ilford. Shows what I do in my spare time - doesn't it - sad.

? the one they have got has admitted that he did it.
My boyfriend got his rucksack searched at Liverpool Street this morning - it made him late for work but at least it was a good excuse.
Did you hear about the girl who was late for work so she rang her mate, asked her to report a bomb on the train she was on so she could use the scare as an excuse for her lateness.  She went to court for it, true story.

Title: Re: How much do you miss ilford?
Post by Skyclad2 on Aug 3rd, 2005, 9:44am
True story, but it wasn't a train. She was running late to catch a flight from Stansted to Dublin.

I also read that the alleged bomber arrested in Rome now has an Italian lawyer who claims her client never intended to harm anyone, only "scare" them!

I quite like the idea of having a webcam featuring Ilford. It would be quite funny to log on and go:

"Ooh! That bloke's about to be mugged..." and then start shouting at the screen: "Run, man! RUN!!!!!"

As a uni student oop north, i'd check the weather down south before making a return visit.
Apart from that, i don't really miss Ilford. I miss it about as much as i miss having genital warts....!

I will put a link on here later for that webcam,it was even featured on the local news.

riveting stuff - oh I do like to be beside the seaside, oh I do like to be.....etc. Cannot really see it catching on in Ilford - we could have the workmen knocking down the Pioneer Market, the workmen working extremely slowly on the tower blocks next to Spectrum Tower. The highlight would be an Ilford council worker actually picking up rubbish!

Title: Re: How much do you miss ilford?

The poor old council litter pickers do pick up the rubbish, it's just that as soon as they do, twice as much is dropped in their wake by the filthy reprobates that inhabit/visit the place.

Ilford is a dirty great sh#thole, cos that's how the inhabitants like it, it reminds them of the filthy squalor they left behind. At least the asbo's working, no screaming hordes of kids in the town centre this summer.

Title: Re: How much do you miss ilford?
Post by Paddington on Aug 9th, 2005, 1:36pm
Yes Topy I do agree that as soon as they pick it up some herbert comes and drops it again but I also see them in the morning when they are meant to pick it up. The little pavement sweeper shoots around far to fast to pick up the rubbish, its just knocked out of the way. It also does not go into all the corners. They should do what Westminster do which is one or two road sweepers working in tandem with the machine which goes much slower and this means that all the rubbish is picked up. I am sure they work really hard but something is not working properly - perhaps it is the people or lack of bins.

Title: Re: How much do you miss ilford?
Post by Topsy on Aug 10th, 2005, 8:58am

Then they complain how untidy it is. I get a lot of rubbish in my front garden as we are in chip shop range - so to speak. They troll down the road and pow when its done its lobbed in my garden. We are also on a corner where people stop in their cars to chomp their chinese, chips and other take aways. Really nice. All thrown in our garden along with empty bottles, syringes, cigarette packets, clothes (especially women's knickers for some reason recently), etc.

I think its because I am up and about early and late - walking the dog - that you seem to see these things before the cleaners come. They have got a lot better I will admit and are fairly regular, but as people say within a day it is as bad as ever.

Again, it is the centre of Ilford and the main roads in and out that let the place down. Once you get away into the suburbs it is actually not bad - bit samey though.

I actually think this is one of the best ideas this Goverment has come up with, it'a got to be in everyone's favour except surveyors! seems a crazy situation at the moment where there could be several surveys done on the same property, this will stop that, especially useful when you're looking to buy.

;D Returned to my hometown late last year due to work reasons, as I couldn't get any up in Yorkshire. Although I like Ilford my four years away have made me used to a slower pace of life so I've decided that my period back here will hopefully last until early next year. Then I want to return to Lancashire (where I first went to when I left in 2002) as I prefer the people there to those I have been amongst in Yorkshire. Alot of them seem to be on the bombastic side and those in the old industrial heartlands can't seem to let go of the past and move on. I won't be returning there even though I still jointly own a house.
Want to make the best of my time back in Ilford and am enjoying supporting the local football team, even if they aren't doing that well. I just wish more Ilfordians would come along and get behind their local club.

Good to hear from you to Pete. I hope to be supporting Ilford football club this saturday away to Waltham Abbey.  :)I do wish more Ilfordians would come along to the home games at Cricklefield.
More info on the club's fixtures can be found on either of these websites.

If looking through the football mittoo site for Ilford. Just scroll down to find a club anywhere in the country. Then tap in Ilford, afterwards tap in Isthmian league. Once there look at fixtures in division one north where Ilford play in.

Everyone's entitled to a hobby. Just trying to do my bit for a club I like. If that means mentioning them on an Ilford forum so be it. I do have some bad, but mostly good memories from my previous time in Ilford which were non football related. Those good memories don't include my school days, as I hated my senior school and still don't have a very high opinion of the place.
As for the typical man bit, football has quite alot of female followers. I should know as my ex girlfriend absolutely adores the game.

well, if I remember rightly, your senior school was not strictly speaking in Ilford.  I went there too and it was ok, my daughter goes there now and she is loving it - so far.

I wasn't knocking the football thing either. My bloke would watch it and play it morning noon and night if he could  ::)

Each to their own. What's good for one isn't always good for the other. Have to say that the school in question hardly prepared me for the outside world. The real learning curve for youngsters is not what school tells them, but when they enter the big wide world after leaving it.

Paid my first visit to the Ilford shopping centre for a long while today. It was good to be able to walk down the precinct without being stopped by someone doing a survey or asking to sign a petition.
However, doesn't that usually occur more on a Saturday?

Those people make a beeline for me all the time - I think I must have the look of someone who won't be rude or something, cos even when I've got my headphones plugged in they still accost me!

I remember one of the more tenacious 'chuggers' giving me a really hard time in Romford because I wouldn't sign up to support her charity.  As I pointed out to her at the time, while it might have only been a few quid a month, she had no idea what my level of giving was, so no matter how small the amount she wanted, it might well have been a small amount too far.  The bloomin' woman really wouldn't get off my back and I think she did her charity more harm than good cos she really p*ssed me off.  I should have complained about her to the charity I s'pose, but of course lazy pants that I am I couldn't be bothered... I want to know how they sleep at nights the aggravating, scruffy pains in the butts that they are!

In Stratford, one of them asked me if I had time to talk about homeless children or some other afflicted children groups (can't remember)
I was waiting for a friend, so had to stay still and it may have looked like I had all the time in the world.
Even so I told him 'no, sorry'

He said something about having time to listen,
I told him 'no, sorry' again.

He then opened his gob to ask me again - the bare-faced cheek of the man!
Incredulously I said 'what part of no don't you understand?!'
He slunk off to find his next victim.

They make me mad!  In Ilford they jump out at you like a court jester or call you 'darlin' and stuff as if anything lke that is going to make me talk to them!

They are the on a par with those awful telephone cold-callers who invade your house in the evenings and ask if you want to do a survey/buy some windows/get insurance.

I hate them all and they all make me want to go aaarrgggh!! [smilie:furious]

Makes me go AAAAAGH as well.

Never understood the economics of it. You pay a charity mugger £7.50 per hour to stand in the street for eight hours - cost £60 per day. You make a direct debit to the charity for £5 per month which means the charity gets £60 in a year. Nett profit to charity over full year - zero!!!! Am I missing something?

I give money to charity out of my pay and I get an avalanche of literature shoved through my door asking for even more. Its got to the stage that I'm getting 4 or 5 requests a week for money from organisations which I support already. My contributions seem to be being eaten up in postage costs never mind saving the whales/pandas and iother cuddly animals etc. (unless they live in the post office)

Suli try putting yourself on the phone list that means you don't get cold callers - dunno what the number is but I did it a few years ago and I haven't had any bother since.

Mind you even before that I'd ask straight away if it was  a sales call and when they said yes tell them that I wasn't interested which usually works. Doesn't make you feel much better if you've run to get the phone though.  It was the ones that said 'no' and then proceeded to try and sell me something who really p*ssed me off though.

Lol @ panda's and other cuddly animals living in the post office!

Angel, that list doesn't work.  Some companies use something that dials random numbers and puts them through to the first available operator when you answer.  that's why there is an audible 'click' noise as you pick and also why sometimes there is no-one at the other end if an operator is not ready.

Hi, Feenix. As one of the few contributors who still lives in Ilford, I'm probably as well placed as anyone to answer your questions. :)
The Angel that you remember closed down in the 80s and the building was bashed about and became a burger joint for a few years. Now, it's a women's clothing store. A new pub was created at the rear of the old building with its entrance off Station Road; this is an Irish themed watering hole, part of the O'Neills' chain and bears no resemblance to the Angel of old.
The Cranbrook Hotel still thrives in Coventry Road and has expanded with an annexe across the road on the corner of Granville Road.
The Cranbrook public house on Cranbrook Road, however, is no more. It struggled on as a pub in various guises but never seemed to prosper. Possibly, it was down to people not liking the way their feet stuck to the yucky carpets or maybe the lack of drinkable beer ... Whatever, it's currently in use as a banqueting hall and has survived in that form for two or three years now.
The Plough, alas, was demolished about 10 years ago and a walk-in medical centre built on the site.
Barking and Loxford Parks are still here, thank goodness; with the rate every spare square metre of ground is being turned into thoroughly un-des res  apartment blocks, we need all the green space we can get.

This is how it looks from the High Road these days ... You used to be able to walk through to the new pub at the back (based on the old stable block) but the gates seem to be closed these days.

When it first opened it kept the original Angel name. Unusually, for a new building, it had gas lights over the bar just above head height (because of the low ceiling) rather than the much higher location in traditional pubs, like the Cauliflower.

I was in there one day when a lad in his late teens or early 20s stood next to me at the bar. His attention was drawn to the lamp above his head both by the radiated heat and the typical hissing sound. Suddenly he reached up and grabbed the mantle between thumb and forefinger! The mantle, of course, disintegrated and his finger and thumb promptly disappeared into his mouth as he attempted to neutralise the pain! "Haven't you seen a gas light before?", I asked. "No!" he mumbled - his mouth still being rather full at the time - and vigorously shook his head ...

Here is the view from Station Road but note that 109 is its High Road number! (https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@51.558955,0.0708012,3a,75y,174.49h,87.71t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1s3R2JMsVei-br6PCh34CicA!2e0!7i13312!8i6656?hl=en)

Yes Feenix, its a great shame that Nigel allowed a group of ne'er do wells to run rings around him while they sabotaged the site's good reputation and friendly atmosphere.

I've often wondered what Aussie Pete might have made of it all ...

They even managed to convince Nigel that I was doing nasty things to Yanny, making fun of him and all sorts - if I so much as mentioned Yanny in a post I would get a PM from Nigel warning me off and threatening me with a permanent ban.

I began to believe that he thought I was pushing Yanny to verge of suicide!

Then one day I got PM from Yanny asking me if I'd like to join him for a drink on one of his occasional visits to Ilford, which I accepted, more out of curiosity than anything else.

So I took him to task over all these accusations and asked him what was going on. You couldn't fake the stunned expression of astonishment on his face - he hadn't a clue what had been going on and had certainly never complained to Nigel about me.

We then spent the rest of the time discussing the possible list of culprits - although we didn't both agree on all counts - but there should have been lots ears burning that afternoon!

Funny old world, ain't it?

Hang on to your memories, Feenix and don't come back even to visit because the state of the place now could only tarnish the good memories.

Until recently, I've defended Ilford against its detractors on this forum but now even I have had enough of  the place. The population has increased massively in the past 10 years and facilities such as schools, nurseries, GPs, hospitals etc haven't expanded to match.  Many of the incomers appear to have no interest  in speaking English. I am not any kind of a racist but, if you're going to live somewhere, then learn the language - it's only polite!

Litter and rubbish are everywhere and street cleaning seems to have diminished. I think the final straw for me was in February when Mr Scribbles left his coat over a chair in a pub while he went to the Gents and, when he came out, it had been stolen.  It was on the bar cctv - the tea-leaves picked it up and examined it then decided they liked it well enough to walk out with it!  It had  his rather nice digital camera in the pocket, too.... I know these things happen anywhere but, for me, it just summed up the kind of low-class place the town has turned into. Two weeks ago, someone stole my dustbin from beside the gate. I saw him walk away from an upstairs window but, by the time I got downstairs and outside, he'd disappeared. (If he's reading this and would care to come back, we still have the lid which you left on the path ::) )

I'm outa here, very soon, returning to the East Midlands which still feels like the country I grew up in.

Sorry to here of your woes Scribs, pinching a bin is just about scraping the barrel(hope they took the rubbish with it)!Living in Brisvegas has made my last 30 years a happy, healthy period of my life and a great place to raise my kids.Television doco's on England convince me I made the right decision to come to Oz in '76,I wish my siblings had done the same but sadly I can't have everything.

I think you have made the right choice there scribbs, I don't regret moving here to Gloucestershire in the early 60s one little bit. Good luck to you and Mr Scribbs.

Following a few weeks Elsewhere, I can now report on the things I miss (in the same way you miss a toothache when it's gone).
I miss the nightly racket of anti-social idiots rambling home in the early hours while yakking loudly on their mobile phones; I miss the tide of dog droppings left in the street for anyone and everyone to tread in; I miss the illegal dumping of rubbish in the side street round the corner; I miss the surly people who deliberately park outside my gate and don't move their car for 2 weeks even though there is a perfectly good parking space outside their own house; I miss the drifting litter that makes its way into my garden from the street; I miss the sensation of being abroad every time I get on a bus or go in a shop and find I'm the only one speaking English; I miss being in a jerry built old terraced house where I can hear my neighbours' TV whether I want to or not; I miss having to wait 5 weeks for a GP appointment.
Do I need to go on?
Regrettably, I have some unfinished business and shall have to return for a brief period before the year ends. It will be a wrench, believe me!

Hi Scribbles, whereabouts in Ilford do you live?

I don't live there any more, Hambo. I spent 40+ years in the Seven Kings /Newbury Park area but moved out earlier this year. I'm now in the East Midlands, close to the area where I grew up, and happier than I've been for years. :)
