I used to eat at an Restaurant called the sombrero on Ley Street opposite C&A. They cooked a wonderful steak. Can anyone tell me if it's still open?

That end of Ley Street was closed off to traffic many years ago and buildings demolished to make way for the Exchange shopping mall.  I do vaguely remember seeing the Sombrero several decades ago but never went in it.  If it relocated, I've no idea where to and it's not currently listed by BT or Yell.com

Unfortunately, this 2014 view is rather congested with traffic but it may help to refresh your memory.

Wilkinsons (Wilko) is the original C & A building - it became Woolworths after C & A pulled out of the UK - with Balfour Approach to the left of it and what was Ley Street to the right, now the entrance to the Exchange Shopping Centre behind the flower stall. If you pan to the right you will see a bus at a stop in a layby: this is directly outside Bodgers.

This 2008 view is a bit clearer.

You can see the extent of the development here:

The now truncated Ley Street stops at the right and the Exchange extends over the railway to emerge in the High Road at a point where there used to be a parade of shops set back from the road which included W H Smith, if that rings any bells ...

In 1965, I would guess, when Ilford became part of the new borough of Redbridge. However, as it was the only Town hall in the new borough, I think it has alrays been known more popularly as Ilford Town Hall unlike, say, East Ham Town Hall which became Newham Town Hall with the old name disappearing from use virtually overnight.

Googling 'Ilford Town Hall' returns lots of results for Redbridge Town Hall but following one link at random finds an entry for 'Ilford Town Hall (also known as Redbridge Town Hall)' on the borough's own website so I think it is reasonable to assume that Ilford Town Hall isn't dead yet and shows no signs of ever being so - despite what the 'official' name is ...

Referring to an earlier ktype posting the C&A building was formerly the Super Cinema which caught the blast of a V2 rocket in 1945 and remained boarded up until developed in the very late 1950's.
Similarly ,some of us oldies will remember the old Ilford Hippodrome site at the corner of Ilford Lane and the High Street which was also blasted by a separate V2 in 1945 and also remained boarded up until about 1957

I wonder if this has fallen through as the site is currently displaying signs advertising the site as being available for redevelopment ...

Well, how many branches of Lidl can one area sustain?  It's reaching the  point where you can't spit in any direction without it landing on a Lidl. I just checked their website which lists no fewer than 8 branches within 4 miles of here. That almost matches Tesco's 9 branches in the same radius! Presumably, for every new supermarket that opens, an existing one is losing business so the bubble has to burst at some point.  Huh
