There is also a strange man who walks the streets of Seven Kings playing a flute, much like the pied piper, although to my knowledge he has so far been unable to dispose of any rats.

I could go to a pub at 7,maybe in the Broadway area, meet up with friends and casual acquaintances, and bump in to them in various pubs over the evening, maybe ending up at The Cauliflower or The Beehive. Not a hint of trouble, bear in mind these pubs had their 'locals' at this time, old boys with their dogs, and I don't mean pit bulls. I abhor what is happening today. Love. |
| I agree used to drink in and around Ilford in mid 50s early 60s very little trouble in any of them (although worked on door of Green Man for 6 months for friend with live bands brewers chucked us out, as had fight every friday for that 6 months). But this was the exception, all rest quiet and could nearly always bump into mates as well. Many pubs had live music too, jazz, pop, blues, something for everyone. Sounds rubbish now.

What a let down, there's me thinking you had gained all this vast store of knowledge and wisdom over your many, many years of lifes experiences when all the time you were just an ordinary bloke with a little mouse in yer and.

| Well, if he really does own Heineken UK you could be right! The reality, though, is that Scottish and Newcastle probably decided to rename it as part of the makeover - not unusual these days - but at least we've been spared one of the more esoteric names like those that include references to slimy garden pests and so on ... S & N wanted to change the pub's image. As locals referred to it simply as "The Havelock", removal of this one word was probably conceived as a clever way of doing it. It will be interesting to how locals refer to it in, say, five to ten years time. Remembering a bomb site that was still referred to as the 'Princess Alice' for twenty years after the pub was destroyed, I'm not convinced there will be much change ...

| It's when you get in that state on a Saturday night that you wake on a Sunday morning with a piece of string hanging from your mouth that you pray it's a teabag.
